Irene Weakens, Continues Toward Atlantic

reserving hope for better storms

Only two or three named storms normally develop by this time in the Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1 and ends Nov. 30. Irene, the ninth of the 2005 season, developed Aug. 7, weakened to a tropical depression and then regained tropical storm strength last week.
